Yesterday, I traveled to a very hot Sacramento (110 degrees!) and testified to the State Assembly Judiciary Committee on behalf of State Senator Josh Becker's California AI Transparency Act (CAITA), which is Senate Bill 942 (SB 942). It passed by a healthy 9-1 vote, having earlier passed the Assembly Privacy Committee by a vote of 8-0 (reminder that the bill sailed through the State Senate).

California Senate Bill 942 - aka the California AI Transparency Act (CAITA) aka SB 942 - passed the California State Senate by an impressive and bipartisan vote of 32-1 on May 21, 2024. It now moves on to the State Assembly where it will first go before the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee in the coming month or so. The bill is modeled in part on Senator Schatz's and Kennedy's proposed AI Labeling Act.

Yesterday, in Sacramento, I had the privilege of testifying before the California Senate Governmental Organization Committee, advocating for SB 942 — the California AI Transparency Act (CAITA). The bill was successfully passed through this Committee with an impressive 11–1 vote (yea!). The bill is authored by State Senator Josh Becker.

I drove to Sacramento on April 16, 2024, and testified to the California Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of State Senator Becker’s California AI Transparency Act (aka Senate Bill 942 or SB 942) The bill passed the Committee 10–1, with one Republican voting yes on it (making it bipartisan in support!). SB 942 now moves on to the California Senate Committee on Governmental Organization, where there will be a hearing on April 23, 2024.

With California Governor Gavin Newsom's signature on October 10, 2023, California Senate Bill 362 ( SB 362) - the California Delete Act - is now law. SB 362 will create a free, easy-to-use online portal operated by the California Privacy Protection Agency ( CPPA) that will first securely verify consumers and then let them request that data brokers delete any personal information they have on them and no longer track them.

California Senate Bill 362 (SB 362) - the California Delete Act - passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee with a 10-3 vote on Friday, September 1, 2023. It now moves on to the Assembly floor for a vote by the entire Assembly. If it passes the floor vote, it will go back to the State Senate (where it previously passed 32-8) as amendments were made while the bill was in the Assembly (e.g., with the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee where it passed with a vote of 7-0).

A survey of over 500 Californians that was conducted on August 25-26 reveals overwhelming support for California Senate Bill 362 ( SB 362) - the California Delete Act - and significant consumer concerns regarding the collection and selling of their personal data by data brokers. Findings of the poll include: 81% of Californians surveyed want state lawmakers to support SB 362. Only 7% said no to SB 362, and the remainder had no opinion.
