Two members of the Helping Hands Quilt Club of Price County were celebrated for their skill and artistry, winning first and second place ribbons at the annual Quilt Show in Medford on April 12-13. The Quilt Show is organized by the Twisted Threads Quilt Group and attracted 235 entries from five states. Kristin Reukauf, of Phillips, said her quilt was three years in the making and the project of a lifetime.

PHILLIPS — Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez was in Phillips on May 1 as part of her effort to highlight Wisconsin small businesses and to enlist support for the legislation to small town business, education and training in the 2025-27 Biennial Budget allocations. The Thursday morning visit started Homespun Coffee and Crafts, followed by nearby Ross’s Sport Shop and Guide Service, and then concluded around the corner at The 5 Senses retail shop.

Phillips, PCUL have tentative lot agreement

PHILLIPS — The city of Phillips and the nonprofit owner of the former Lionite mill, Price County United Limited, have reached a tentative agreement on a 1 acre parking lot to avoid an eminent domain situation for the city, according to the outcome of a special Phillips Common Council meeting on May 1.
Kids plant trees on Arbor Day

PHILLIPS — The fourth-graders of Phillips Elementary School took part in an Arbor Day tree planting event at Sokol Park on April 24 to plant a red maple and a honey locust tree as two of several replacement trees being planted this spring to include some crab apple trees. Kristin Hickerson, who was present with fellow fourth-grade teacher Blake Edwards, said the kids were also at Sokol Park in 2024. In years past, they have planted trees all over the city.
FEMA cuts cancel tornado shelter

PHILLIPS — A community tornado shelter that was planned as part of wider construction projects at Phillips Public School District is now less likely after the grant program to fund it was cut from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Phillips School District Superintendent Rachel Hoffman confirmed that a federal memo and advisory announced the termination of the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities grant for projects that were approved by FEMA in fiscal years 2020 through 2023.

A half-century of service: Bergman served 56 years on the Hill Board of Supervisors.

Roger Bergman stepped down from the town of Hill Board of Supervisors last week after 56 years of service to the community. Bergman attended his first board meeting as a supervisor on April 10, 1969, and was presented with a retirement clock and a party at his last meeting on April 15, 2025. “I liked the job,” Bergman said. “In fact, I think everyone should take a crack at it just to keep up with what’s going on.”kAmq6C8>2?
