A fentanyl overdose caused the death of a 27-year-old man who was found unresponsive in his jail cell last month at Lancaster County Prison, according to the county coroner’s office. Deputy Coroner Eric Bieber on Tuesday confirmed that an autopsy ruled that Chaz Lowery, of Hanover, died from an overdose of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid that is significantly more potent than morphine.

Lancaster County commissioners unanimously approved a three-year contract Wednesday that makes Dr. Michael Reihart the county’s medical director. The contract with Reihart and his employer, Penn State Health Community Medical Group, lasts three years at a cost of $25,000 a year. Reihart has provided medical guidance to Lancaster County’s 911 services since 2002 in his capacity as a regional 911 medical director for counties in southcentral Pennsylvania, officials said Tuesday.

If you’re not vaccinated for the measles virus, it’s not too late to get protected, a medical consultant for Lancaster County said Tuesday. Dr. Michael Reihart, a longtime medical director for 911 services in south-central Pennsylvania, encouraged anyone not vaccinated for the measles virus, or unsure of their vaccination status, to get a shot as quickly as possible.

Lancaster County commissioners approved a plan Wednesday to use $18 million from a capital improvement fund to pay for various projects and purchases, more than half of which is slated to go to planning a new prison. County officials estimate spending $10 million on consultants and a construction manager for the new prison this year. The commissioners in December approved the process to select a construction manager, but the county has yet to advertise a request for applicants.

Lancaster County President Judge Leonard G. Brown III appointed attorney Donald Geiter to the Lancaster County Board of Elections on Wednesday, filling a seat Commissioner Josh Parsons vacated in order to run in a special election for state Senate. Parsons is the Republican nominee in the March 25 special election for the 36th Senate District seat formerly occupied by Ryan Aument. Aument resigned from the post after accepting a position in U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick's office.
