Winter can be a lost season for those of us who live on Cape Cod only during parts of the other three. Typically, I visit once or twice to check on the cottage. Did I use enough antifreeze to prevent a pipe break? Is the kitchen broom still propping open the door of the fridge to ward off mold? Are the windows shut tight? My family and I would rush in, check for red flags, and rush out, consoling ourselves with the idea that spring was only a snowstorm or two away.

They appeared suddenly one night on our patio, four young raccoons, a quartet of rumble-tumble trouble. They pressed their little bandit faces against our glass sliders, scratching to get inside our tiny cottage. We stared in disbelief, my wife and I – bouncing between “they’re so cute” and “oh, my God, they’re trying to break in.” As their tiny humanoid hands fingered the edges of the glass looking for an opening, we took photos and video.

Here, on the mile of sand that is West Dennis Beach, the stretch between lifeguard chair number 7 and 9 is, for me, sacred ground. It is where my extended family meets for one special weekend in summer. Where my sons long ago chased seagulls and steered skim boards across the tide line. Where, as a youngster myself, I made some of my earliest attempts to ride the waves.
