Det var som et nostalgisk pust fra gamle dager i Sparta Amfi da speaker Thor Erik Johannessen oppfordret publikum i Tindlundhallen om å trekke sammen mot midten da det var mange som ville inn i hallen for å se kampen. Da var det fortsatt en halv time igjen til kampstart. Det er tydelig at sarpepublikummet allerede lengter etter kølleidrettene. Solgte seg innDet var Sparta som kom best i gang i oppgjøret da laget scoret på den ene av to straffeslag de fikk ta før kampstart.

VIRGINIA — A man faces a felony charge after allegedly starting a small wildfire in near-critical conditions Tuesday. Daniel Dean Kruse, 59, of Virginia, is accused of igniting a large mining tire near the Leonidas Overlook along County Road 101 just west of Eveleth around 6:30 a.m. When authorities arrived on the scene, they found the approximately 8- to 10-foot tire “engulfed in flames, along with many of the surrounding trees, shrubs and ground cover,” according to a criminal complaint.

DULUTH — A child sexual abuse case that may be the longest-running prosecution in the state will be allowed to continue, a higher court ruled this week. The case against Shawn Francis Mortensen, 45, of Brookston, has been pending for nearly a decade and has been beset by a number of delays, including an October 2022 mistrial after the late discovery of a video relevant to the case.

GRAND MARAIS — A man accused of fatally bludgeoning an elderly resident with a shovel and moose antler more than two years ago remains incompetent to stand trial, a judge ruled this week. Levi William Axtell “suffers from ongoing delusions that prevent him from rationally consulting with his legal counsel and participating in his legal defense,” Judge Steve Hanke wrote.
