Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), while currently the most scalable and practical option to decarbonize aviation, is set to be hampered by high prices, more than twice that of kerosene, until mid-century. So says a report from LEK Consulting, a global strategy consultancy. The report says that to achieve a targeted 65% penetration by 2050 would require a leap in global SAF capacity to over 400 million tons p.a. from less than 1 million tons p.a. today.

Airbus has formed a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) strategic partnership with Washington D.C.-based DG Fuels (DGF). The partnership will use a new fuel-production system developed by DGF to source SAF from a wider range of waste and residue sources. It will run entirely on cellulosic waste products, such as wood waste from the logging industry, coupled with renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power.

The UK government has announced plans for a revenue-certainty program for the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry. The goal is to boost confidence and investment in domestic SAF production. The proposed program would give producers greater assurance on earnings from SAF output to accelerate investment in SAF production and so help reduce aviation’s fossil fuel reliance as part of the UK’s net-zero strategy.
