Ballarat Police say they continue to see locals driving distracted and over the speed limit, as a Victorian police operation continues over the ANZAC Day long weekend. Police will be out on the roads statewide as part of Operation Compass, targeting speeding and impaired drivers. 91 lives have been lost on Victorian roads so far this year, compared to 90 at this time last year.

On Monday, the Vatican confirmed the death of the 88-year-off pontiff from a stroke and heart failure. A local mass in memory of the late Pope’s life was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral yesterday.

Police are investigating after a terrifying robbery at a Ballarat shopping centre on Friday afternoon. At around 4:15pm, an unknown man entered a clothing store at Stockland Wendouree and began collecting jackets, a puffer vest and a pair of jeans worth over $4000. When a staff member approached the man after he allegedly attempted to leave without paying, he reportedly lifted his top up to display a knife and made threats to the employee.

As the federal election nears, both major parties are promising to upgrade sporting facilities across the Ballarat region. The Federal Coalition is promising $1 million to upgrade Ballarat’s City Oval. Liberal candidate for Ballarat, Paula Doran, says she’s had strong feedback about the need for the upgrade to provide accessible female changing facilities and enhance the player and spectator experience.

Called ‘BSides’, the event will come to Federation University next month, and feature speakers from Microsoft, Telstra and IBM. There are currently versions in 257 cities around the world.
