SFSD teacher contracts coming in

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The Sioux Falls School District is entering the home stretch of teacher contract season. Every year there are resignations as teachers move or retire. Human Resources Director Becky Dorman says that part of the process has gone better this year than years past. Teacher contracts were recently sent out, and teachers have two weeks to decide whether or not to sign them.
Car thefts declining in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls authorities say stolen car numbers are down in the city but are still warning of the everyday threat. Reports have been on the decline the last two years. However, police say a suspect broke into two apartments this past Sunday, stealing cash and two cars. One car was recovered, but the other is still missing. Officials note that 80 percent or more of cars stolen in Sioux Falls are left unlocked with the keys inside.
High risk offender being released from prison

PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — The South Dakota Department of Corrections is warning about the release of another high-risk offender from prison. 35-year old Glenford Old Lodge will be released to the Winner area. He will be released tomorrow, after serving his entire term and won’t be on parole supervision.

WASHINGTON, DC (KELO.com) — Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City has come a long way in the last 20 years – and Senator John Thune says he aims to keep it going. 20 years ago the Defense Department’s Base Realignment and Closure Commission proposed closing the base. Thune says it was a gut punch for him, during his first year in the Senate. An all-out effort saved the base, and Senator Thune says Ellsworth has proven its strategic value since then.
Congressman Johnson leary of gift of plane to President

WASHINGTON, DC (KELO.com) — South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson is voicing his concerns over President Trump receiving a rather large gift from the Qatari royal family. It’s a Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet, valued at approximately $400 million dollars. But Johnson says it dosen’t look good. Trump says the aircraft will serve as a temporary replacement for Air Force One until the new presidential planes are ready. Johnson says he understands the need for a new plane.
ICE raid in Madison - 8 arrested

MADISON, SD (KELO.com) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is confirming raid operations took place in Madison yesterday. As a result, ICE arrested eight people at two manufacturing businesses. Three were detained from Manitou Equipment and five from Global Polymer Industries. Those arrested are from Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador. Madison residents reported blocked streets and helicopters flying above during the raids. One witness described several agents wearing masks and vests.
22-year old Sioux Falls man accused of murder in mother’s shooting death

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — A 22-year old Sioux Falls man is charged with murder in the shooting death of his mother early Monday morning. Nathaniel Borchert was arrested a short time after police arrived at the home in the 11-hundred block of North Minnesota Avenue. Police Lieutenant Aaron Nyberg describes what they found. The victim is the suspect’s mother, 48-year old Jamie Lynn Borchert. Other family members were in the home when police arrived.
Avel eCare telemedicine program helping resolve crisis cases

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota is leading the nation with a model of mental health care that reaches to remote areas that don’t have care facilities. Avel eCare’s Crisis Care telemedicine program is being used in nine states to provide secure video connections to behavioral health professionals. Avel’s Vice President and General Manager Brian Erickson says the result is fewer jail bookings, fewer E-R transports, and better outcomes for people in crisis.
School board adjusts student cell phone use police

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Students in the Sioux Falls School District won’t be allowed to use their cell phones during most of the school day for the upcoming academic year. Incoming Superintendent Jamie Nold led a study committee that determined the policy. Elementary and Middle School students won’t be able to use their phones at all, but Nold says High School Students will have a short period of cell phone use each day.
South Dakota measles free - cases increasing elsewhere

PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota Health officials are watching, but so far, no measles cases in the state. The sickness is spreading nationally, with about a thousand cases so far. South Dakota’s vaccination rates have declined in recent years, hovering at just over 90-percent.
