After yesterday’s history-laced letter about our visit to the Berkshires, I’m jumping ahead to let you know where we are. Our quirky history lessons will continue, and I will return to those busy first three days, but first, some lighter reading. There is a sweetness and slowing of our days this week. This year, we took a different route and made several literary and artistic stops in the traffic-choked Northeast Corridor.

A quick check-in from Virginia, where it was 65 degrees and sunny today. That’s a far cry from all the snow the folks back home received yesterday. We had Skyline Drive to ourselves from mid morning to mid afternoon. We ended up seeing more deer than humans. However, the one person we did chat with was super-friendly Ranger Kyle at the entrance gate. Since no one else was around, we lingered.

And so begins the season of the witch. Today, the Monday of this three-day weekend is always a watermark for us. It’s been a crazy few days— frenetic, choked, and boisterous from the crowds. The traffic is always the antithesis of why we live here, as crowds flock to the White Mountains for the stunning leaves. The 45-minute drive along the length of the scenic two-lane Kancamagus Highway took a friend five hours on Saturday.
