The number of mortgage approvals reached the highest level in more than two years in October as buyers and sellers scrambled to complete deals before expected tax rises in Rachel Reeves’s maiden budget. According to the Bank of England, 68,300 mortgages for house purchases were approved last month, the highest number since August 2022, and above consensus estimates of 64,500.

Ministers are considering a partial U-turn on plans to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, which could lead to Toyota Prius-style hybrid models being granted a five-year reprieve, according to reports.
