As I return from hibernation, I lament the worst NCAA Tournament I’ve ever seen, and I’m not just saying that because it’s been 10 days since Vanderbilt farted away a first-round game while I was stuck in a work meeting. Yeah, that happened. It’s not just that the Final Four is all 1-seeds, and the tournament has been stunningly devoid of upsets and Cinderella and everything else that makes the NCAA Tournament compelling.

The Commodores made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017, as the 10-seed in the East Regional. Vanderbilt will open the tournament on Friday at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, where they’ll play 7-seed Saint Mary’s at a time to be determined. Vanderbilt finished the regular season 20-11, 8-10 in the SEC, and lost to Texas in the first round of the SEC Tournament.

As I write this, Vanderbilt is included in all 102 brackets on the Bracket Matrix. But the average position is in Dayton, as the fourth-to-last team in, and the bubble could shrink by as many as two spots today. That means that if they’re even slightly wrong about where Vanderbilt is in relation to the cut line right now...

I realize that we’re pretty universally regarded as a tournament team by bracketologists, but the ESPN Bubble Watch feature has us at 62% odds and if we’re in the tournament, we’re close to the cut line — which means, as I pointed out on Wednesday, we’re a bracketologist error away from being out of the field. So... what are we watching today?
