    HARRISONBURG – Cooper Colcombe couldn’t have had a better first state meet race. The Strasburg freshman capped off a stellar season by winning the state title in the Class 2 boys 100. “It feels great,” Colcombe said. “I’m just very thankful, very thankful for God.” The Class 2 Track and Field State Championships were held at JMU on Friday and Saturday with Strasburg finishing eighth as a team in both the boys and girls meets.

    WOODSTOCK – Central’s girls tennis program continues to shine even with a young team. The Falcons beat Bruton 6-2 in the Class 2 state quarterfinals on Friday despite a weather delay.     Central’s girls softball team won their second straight Region 2B title. The third-seeded Falcons knocked off top-seeded Page County 10-5 on the road in the Region 2B finals on Thursday. Each team scored a run in the first and three runs in the second. Central scored a run in the third to take a 5-4 lead. Page County tied the game with a run in the fifth. Central scored three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

    WOODSTOCK – Momentum switched in the blink of an eye on Thursday. Central’s boys tennis team took the momentum and ran with it in a 5-1 victory over Poquoson in the Class 2 state quarterfinals. “Just top to bottom another great day,” Central boys tennis coach Brandon Lamma said. “Hats off to Poquoson. Definitely, the toughest team we’ve faced all season. But I think this was some of the best tennis I’ve seen from my boys all season too. I’m just super, super proud.

    Central’s girls soccer season came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday. The second-seeded Falcons lost to third-seeded Riverheads on penalty kicks in a 2-2 game in the Region 2B semifinals. Ava Pulizzi and Bailey Vaughan each had a goal, while Anna Bible had two assists to lead Central. Last year Central found itself in the exact same situation but pulled out a win in penalty kicks in the regional semifinals against Madison County.
