Dirck Clark, former president of the Missouri Western Board of Governors, and Charlie Shields, former State Senator of the 34th District, were among the inductees in this year’s St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class.

The soon-to-be senior and running back from St. Joseph Central had 18 Division I offers in all – three from schools in power five conferences. In the end, Fields chose Vanderbilt University in the SEC. “This whole football thing is to set you up for your future,” Fields told KFEQ Radio.

He currently holds PGA status, in fact, having won the Puerto Rico Open this past March, and will hold that status for at least the next three years. Through it all, the Gallatin native still carries the Missouri Western logo on his golf bag. The former Griffon will never forget where he came from.

That, combined with five innings from starting pitcher Will Archer, was enough to lift the Dragons (22-8) to a 7-3 win over West County in Class 3 state semifinals in Ozark on Wednesday afternoon. Mid-Buchanan, already in its first Final Four ever in baseball, now advances to its first state championship game in program history.

By TOMMY REZACSt. Joseph PostOZARK – Chris Coy threw six innings of one-hit ball, and Garret Ferrell blasted a two-run RBI double in the sixth, lifting Benton (32-3) to a 4-1 win over MICDS in a Class 4 state semifinal at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark Wednesday. The Cardinals, now winners of 21 straight games, have reached the state championship in baseball for just the second time in school history and the first time since 2007. Benton drew first blood in the top of the first.
