CHARLES TOWN — The Ranson Civic Center served as a venue large enough to host the Celebration of Life for Tyler Sigler, a 28-year-old county resident who was killed Saturday in an accident at Locust Hill Golf Course. Sigler, along with his friend, Tyler Browning, were in a golf cart that was hit when a tree fell during a fast-approaching storm. Browning remains in Winchester Medical Center in serious condition.

MARTINSBURG—Two Bunker Hill residents have been sentenced in U.S. Federal Court for selling large quantities of crystal methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and heroin in Berkeley, Morgan and Hampshire counties. A press release issued this week announced that Andrew Ross Hose, 40, was sentenced to 293 months in prison. Bradley Allen Lopp, 36, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison.

CHARLES TOWN — Legislators from the Eastern Panhandle gathered in Charles Town Monday evening to discuss bills that passed into law during the recently concluded legislative session, as well as bills that failed to make the cut. In attendance were Delegates Joe Funkhouser, Wayne Clark and Bill Ridenour and Sens. Jason Barrett and Sen. Patricia Rucker.

CHARLES TOWN—Jefferson County Sheriff’s officials have confirmed that one individual was killed and another injured in an accident Saturday evening. Chief Deputy Victor Lupis issued a statement Monday indicating that at approximately 4:54 p.m., first responders were dispatched to the Locust Hill Golf Course, 278 St. Andrews Drive, in Charles Town. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered two golfers who were severely injured as a result of a tree falling on their golf cart.

Sigler, a 2014 graduate of Washington High School, went on to attend Liberty University where he was an All-American wrestling champion and a key member of the University’s wrestling team. A YouTube video posted by Next Gen highlighted Sigler’s achievements saying that he earned two national rankings and appeared in high profile matches and national tournaments during his wrestling career.

SHEPHERDSTOWN — Nearly every seat was filled at the Jefferson County Distinguished Citizen dinner honoring Dan and Ginny Rowzie on April 22. The couple was selected as Jefferson County’s recipients of the Shenandoah Area Scout’s Distinguished Citizen award. In addition to the award presented to the Rowzies, the dinner served as a fundraising event for the council and a time to hear of the impact of Scouting on different individuals.

SHEPHERDSTOWN–For 13 years, one Jefferson County family has kept the memory of their son alive while working to give back to a part of the community he loved the most. Andrew Rotruck, a member of the 2007 state championship Jefferson High School baseball team, was killed in an automobile accident in Cumberland, Maryland on Sept. 2, 2008.

CHARLES TOWN--On May 1, crowds around the country gathered in public and private to participate in the annual National Day of Prayer. Locally, a group gathered just outside the Jefferson County Courthouse to pray together. Angela Wood, a member of Fellowship Bible Church, has organized the event each year and provides a suggested list of individuals for whom people should pray as well as handouts from the nonprofit National Day of Prayer Task Force.

MARTINSBURG — The Partners in Prevention initiative, in conjunction with National Child Abuse and Prevention Month, gathered last week at the Purple Iris to bestow awards on some well-deserving individuals. In addition, the group heard from one of those who are on the front lines day in and day out when dealing with the needs of children potentially in turmoil.
