With more than two weeks between the end of the regular season and the Suffolk Class B baseball championship series, Babylon coach Mike Birnbaum booked scrimmages with some of the premier programs on Long Island, including county champions Garden City and Connetquot, as well as St. Anthony’s, to keep his team sharp.

For East Islip’s softball program, its fourth trip to the Long Island championship stage under coach Jason McGowan, proved to be the charm. The Redmen defeated Glen Cove, 2-0, for its first-ever L.I. title in a classic pitcher’s duel on June 4, at Farmingdale State College. Given the dominant arms of East Islip’s Cate Ropiak and Glen Cove’s Brooke Simmons throughout the postseason, it wasn’t going to take many runs to decide which team would walk away with the hardware.
