I can fully admit, with a lot of training, mentorship, therapy and even more training, I wasn’t always the best manager. I shouted across the newsroom when emotions flared. I didn’t step in for journalists in verbal altercations with others. I sat silent while someone spoke badly about a coworker.

Like those of us who came of age with the internet, freelance multimedia journalist Brandon Tauszik viewed the web as permanent — once something was on the internet, it was always on the internet. But now he’s realized it could be gone tomorrow. “A publication could just go out of business and take down whatever content they want. Your writing is not permanent. Your photography is not permanent. Anything you’re putting online is short-lived and will probably vanish.” Tauszik said.

Neighbors, neighborhood, safe, text, call and data. I feel like I’ve used these words more in the last week than in my entire life. Friday morning, Sept. 27, Hurricane Helene hit our mountainside home in Asheville, North Carolina. I woke my wife up around 5 a.m. and told her to get the dog and go to the basement. Moments later, we heard trees falling all around. By 10 a.m., the worst had passed and, miraculously, our home and lives were safe. By habit, I grabbed my phone. I still had two LTE bars.
