LONDON, September 24, 2024: According to new analysis from Omdia, 365 million subscription video on demand (SVOD) subscriptions will be distributed through operator TV, broadband and mobile bundles, representing 20% of the global streaming market. By 2029, bundling is expected to generate 540 million online video streaming subscriptions, or 25% of the global market.

Disney has confirmed a series of new service updates after reporting a total loss of 11.7m subscriptions in 3Q23, primarily due to Indian Premier League cricket leaving the Indian Disney+ Hotstar service. Not counting India, Disney gained 1.1m new subscriptions globally but lost 300,000 in North America. The first change sees the cost of Disney subscriptions in the US increase in October 2023. The ad-free version of Disney+ increases from $10.99/month to $13.99/ month.

Up until relatively recently, the indirect wholesale segment of SVOD – meaning services bundled via operators in mobile, broadband or TV packages – had failed to make a dent in the largely global direct-to-consumer business. For most of the 2010s, wholesale SVOD subscriptions made up less than 10% of the total global market for online video subscriptions. Through the 2010s, SVOD grew from a small niche to a global phenomenon, built on contract-free and online direct-to-consumer relations.
