    By Tony KieneA report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that in 2020, the opioid-related death rate among Black Americans exceeded that of their white counterparts for the first time since the opioid crisis was declared in the United States some two decades ago. In fact, during 2020 alone, deaths among Black Americans due to opioids increased by 44%, according to the CDC. For those between the ages of 15 to 24, the death rate nearly doubled.

    Back in the fall of 2017, author, radio host and music journalist Andrea Swenson published her critically acclaimed debut, “Got to Be Something Here: The Rise of the Minneapolis Sound.” It not only garnered her a Minnesota Book Award but put to rest the spurious notion that there was not a vibrant Black music scene here in the Twin Cities prior to the emergence of Prince and his ultra-talented compatriots at the dawn of the 1980s.
