Tariffs have been on car buyers' minds as they've headed to lots around the country. The threat of paying an import tax on our favorite Toyotas, Hyundais and Land Rovers has motivated buyers in a way the car industry hasn't seen in years. Auto dealers' customer traffic index rose to 37 from 33 in Q1 last year. Franchised dealers reported a 10-point increase in in-person visits, the largest increase since the metric was introduced in Q3 2022, according to Cox Automotive.

Elon Musk wears many hats. As an unofficial member of President Donald Trump's cabinet, Musk once went to a cabinet meeting to make that point painfully clear. His most valuable asset is Tesla, the trillion-dollar electric vehicle maker/AI/driver assistance software company. He owns 13% of the company and is its CEO. Musk also owns xAI, the company that is now the parent of X, formerly known as Twitter, and its Grok AI assistant.

U.S. tariffs are taking a toll on Japan's economy. Exports from the Far-East island nation fell in May for the first time in eight months, mainly due to declines from stalwarts like Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi. Autos accounted for about 28% of Japan's total 21 trillion yen ($145 billion) of export goods in 2024. So when exports to the U.S. fell 11.1% in May, you can bet a lack of cars leaving the Nagoya port played a big role.

As one of the major industries losing to foreign competition, automakers have welcomed the 25% tariffs on auto imports. Everyone from auto industry execs to auto worker union reps has praised President Donald Trump's trade war. "Ford supports the administration's goal to strengthen the U.S. economy by growing manufacturing, and we also support a level playing field globally for domestic and foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEM)," Ford CEO Jim Farley said.

Once its launch in Austin, Texas, proves successful, Tesla plans to expand its robotaxi program to multiple cities. Self-driving Teslas have already been spotted on city streets with a human riding shotgun ahead of the program's official launch. "It's prudent for us to start with a small number, confirm that things are going well, and then scale it up," Musk told CNBC's David Faber last month.

It's fascinating to juxtapose the post cable news careers of Carlson and Chris Cuomo. Carlson found the freedom to ask tough questions post Fox News Meanwhile Cuomo is still carrying water for the highest bidder (news nation 😂) post CNN
