    Kentucky Owl has a weird, possibly unique story in the annals of whiskey history. The brand’s history dates back to 1879, when it was founded by Charles M. Dedman and awarded license DSP-16 to produce distilled spirits. By all accounts the distillery was a successful one, lasting until Prohibition fever started sweeping the nation in the second decade of the 20th century.

It’s a cocktail bar with live music. And the fact that it’s all of the above is one reason why the flagship establishment in Manhattan’s NoMad neighborhood has survived and thrived since 2012 — its sibling location in Murray Hill opened in 2017.

    Nikka is one of the most respected whisky distillers in Japan, and has been for more than nine decades. Founded by Masataka Takesturu in 1934, Nikka has stayed true to his philosophy of marrying tradition and innovation. Although he didn’t live to see it, his philosophy is perhaps most evident in Nikka’s gin and vodka, both introduced in 2017. They’re innovative, to be sure, but it’s not because cutting-edge technology is used to make them. Quite the opposite, in fact.

The collection was curated by Mark Wade, an Indiana-based collector and whiskey historian, and features bottlings such as a 1910 Four Roses, a 1916 Old Mock, and a 1920 Old Stagg Reserve.
