We Have a Moral Imperative To Reclaim America From the Extremists in Power Published April 12, 2025 The United States is the wealthiest, most powerful country the world has ever seen. And we’ve always had a moral tug-of-war between those who want to hoard wealth and power and those who honor the dignity of every person. What’s happening now is that the wealthy and powerful are working to divide the people—and keep the wealth and power for themselves.

It is not often that a volume of policy recommendations makes national news. Yet this is what happened during the 2024 election cycle in the United States, when the innocuously named Project 2025, a set of ultra-right-wing proposals assembled by the Heritage Foundation, a prominent Washington, D.C., think tank, and roughly a dozen like-minded groups, became the topic of conversation on the internet, and in barber shops, beauty salons, churches, synagogues and mosques across the land.

When Donald Trump is sworn in as president on Monday, he’ll be joined onstage by Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and other billionaires. Despite Trump’s ostensibly populist campaign, the moment will symbolize his toxic linkage of extremist, far-right bigotry with the class interests of billionaires. Their wealth is already skyrocketing. As Chuck Collins calculates from Forbes wealth data, at the end of 2024 there were 813 U.S. billionaires with a combined total wealth of $6.72 trillion.

Once again, our communities are going to have to be our own climate heroes. The global climate conference COP29 is off to a less-than-promising start. As Spain reels from devastating flooding, Azerbaijan — a major oil and gas producer — is hosting perhaps the most fossil-fuel-friendly COP gathering yet. As Sam Pizzigati reminds us, that suits oil industry lobbyists and the world’s wealthiest just fine.

RT @D_felsenthal: This is tonight! Please come. @HillaryKelly @topefolarin @krevinlorenzo @z_hu__ in conversation with @adalva . It'll be a…

I'm really grateful I had a chance to write about Scholastique Mukasonga, a writer I've admired for quite some time. Her latest is a nuanced examination of women and Christianity in Rwanda in the 1950s. I believe she asks questions that apply everywhere.

Scholastique Mukasonga’s latest novel suggests that marginalized believers might need to look outside the traditional bounds of Christianity to find true spiritual freedom, writes @TopeFolarin: https://t.co/VhnJshWeEa

Really enjoyed this conversation. Thanks so much for the opportunity, Bethanne.

We've all got lot on our minds. You might get a bit solace listening to @TopeFolarin talk w/me about how his autofiction is in response to being a first-gen Nigerian-American. May we all listen to those whose race, identity, ability, and resources differ from our own.
