WASHINGTON — Colder air will rush in behind a strong cold front Wednesday setting the mountains up west of the divide for their big first snowfall. Rain changes to snow by 10 p.m. Wednesday. Snow tapers off by Thursday morning but then really picks up by noon Thursday. Snow will continue, heavy at times through Friday into Saturday. Winds will also be a factor with gusts over 40 mph. Blizzard conditions are possible with visibility below 1/4 mile.

Critical time: noon until 8 p.m. each day. Impact:Extreme heat with highs 96 - 101 degrees. Heat indices 99 - 107 degrees. Need to Know: Avoid outdoor activities. Stay in the shade if outside and take frequent breaks. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of non-alcoholic beverages. Water is your best bet.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Wednesday evening between 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. there were multiple sightings of a meteor according to fireball.amsmeteors.org. The sightings ranged from just over a second to over seven seconds. In a Ring video from Donald Bradner in Lyndon, Virginia, the meteorite looks bigger and brighter. Very cool. I remember seeing one when I was eight years old. It's a sight that stays with you. Other sightings came from Lebanon, PA, Harrisburg, PA, Westlake, OH, and Southfield, MI.

WASHINGTON — Every Feb. 2, a group of bearded men reach inside a cage and pull out a groundhog. The two most famous are "Punxsutawney Phil" in Pennsylvania and "Beauregard Lee" in Georgia. The lore is that if he sees his shadow he gets scared and runs back into his lair preparing for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, then he remains out and declares an early end to winter.

WASHINGTON — The nation’s capital experienced record-shattering warmth on Friday. New record highs of 80 degrees at Reagan National Airport and 79 degrees at Dulles Airport were set. These were not only records for January 26, but were also record highs for the entire month. January and December are the only two months of the year that have never seen 80 degree weather in Washington, D.C. NOAA’s weather records for the nation’s capital date back to the 1870s.

WASHINGTON — Excitement is brewing over the Ravens vs Chiefs championship game as many fans plan to pack the stands of M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore Sunday. But both teams will have to find a way to score touchdowns in wet conditions, with periods of rain and showers during the AFC Championship game. Plan on temperatures in the 40s for the game, which starts at 3 p.m. and can be watched on WUSA9. If you plan on tailgating between noon and 3 p.m., have umbrellas or ponchos at the ready.
