Every year, in a particularly lovely WhatsApp group, a uniquely appealing invitation is posted by my friend Carrie: ‘Might any of you join me for a week or two on my 125-acre Philippine island, Ariara? There’s yoga, massages and pristine beaches on tap.’  Having discovered the unique sense of isolation and beauty offered by the Philippines in the early 2000s, Carrie and her ‘maverick’ husband, Charlie, have bewildered me with their bravery and commitment to Ariara.

As any parent will attest, family holidays come with a certain weight of expectation, especially for Generation Lockdown. But Los Angeles, with its film-star mystique, bright sunshine-filled skies and TikTok-famous shops and avenues, is truly the City of Angels for families with teens. For my husband and I, it’s a no-brainer: my sister has lived there with her old-school LA husband since 2000 and we were long overdue a visit.

The King’s love of the arts is common knowledge. So too is his unwavering support for the education of young people. And the lengths to which he has gone to enhance their creative studies is remarkable. Take The Prince’s Foundation, of which he is patron. One thing that distinguishes its vocational courses – as well as its masters’ degrees and doctorates – from any others in the world is that the students get to spend time at properties owned by His Majesty.
