They tower above city skylines, looking imposing and invincible. But when cranes fall, as they sometimes do, people's lives are at risk. The IJF has found some jurisdictions around the world are insisting older cranes be taken out of service, a measure the B.C. government has yet to adopt despite more than two dozen incidents involving tower cranes over the last five years.

For more than a decade, incarcerated women have voiced concerns about stifling heat in the maximum-security unit at the Edmonton Institution for Women (EIFW). One cell, near the boiler room, gets so hot in the summer it’s known as “The Microwave.” Women in the unit have reported indoor temperatures rising above 30 degrees in recent years, according to an Office of the Correctional Investigator (OCI) document obtained by the IJF through an access to information request.

VPD’s response to @brish_ti's story underscores the important role of independent media. When govt communicates by press release or X, it's offering spin over transparency. To be accountable to the public, it needs to answer media queries. VPD didn’t bother doing that.

The report is accurate. The VPD has been asked to identify factual inaccuracies and responded without a single example. Our reporter also contacted the department in advance of publication with questions and the VPD failed to respond.
