After watching Joel die in last week’s episode, it was easy to predict that Ellie would be on the warpath looking for his killer. And she is — of course she is! — but the third episode, titled “The Path,” slows things way down. There’s healing to do, and rebuilding, and more importantly, grieving — for the characters, and for us. By the time Ellie finally does leave Jackson in pursuit of Abby, it’s clear the show has taken another serious departure from the plot of the game.

The marketing math of double Michael B. Jordan plus vampires doesn’t begin to cover the scope of this thing. Heck, the vampires don’t even make an appearance until an hour into the two-plus hour runtime — and somehow you don’t even miss them.

Daredevil: Born Again was in the works for years. Charlie Cox got the call about reprising his role in 2020, he made his first appearances in She-Hulk and Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, and the series officially went into development in 2022. Unless Feige has a crystal ball, there was no way Marvel could have predicted that their spin on Mayor Kingpin would land during the particular political moment we find ourselves in now.
