On the one hand, they speak to the rebuffing of a key element of Israel's strategy in its 15-month genocide in the Gaza Strip - to depopulate these areas permanently through besiegement, starvation and relentless bombing, and to possibly even re-colonise these areas with Jewish settlers in the future. On the other hand, everyone knows that a lunar landscape awaits these communities, where entire neighbourhoods, let alone individual homes, are unrecognisable.

For the past nine months, Israel has carried out a brutal assault on Gaza, destroying much of the enclave and killing tens of thousands (if not well over a hundred thousand) Palestinians. Israel has said that it will not end the war until it destroys Hamas—despite the fact that Hamas has agreed to ceasefire conditions more than once, and despite the fact that this is an all-but-impossible goal that promises to extend the war for the foreseeable future.

Palestinians refer to their decades-long predicament as al Nakba al mustamirra – the continuous Nakba (catastrophe) – an acknowledgment of perpetual vulnerability to displacement at the hands of Zionist settler colonialism, through direct and indirect violence, from war and assassination to legal and bureaucratic violence. Given this, Israel’s campaign in Gaza since 7 October evokes real fears of a full-blown ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
