Directors and writers can make magic before egos and studio executives get in the way. When unique voices and clear visions collide, genius can feel like fantasy. Freddy Macdonald’s whimsical and wild Sew Torn is an adult fairy tale mixed with Happy Death Day, Saw, and a hint of American Gods Season 1. It is creative, refreshing, and unexpected and features a superb ensemble cast. Macdonald may be young, but he is the real deal, and Sew Torn is proof.

To English fans, horror movies named Natatorium instantly evoke Erika Christensen’s screeching stalker in the cheesy but entertaining Swimfan. Helena Stefánsdóttir’s Icelandic horror-laced drama is not that. It is far more nuanced and exceeds every expectation. The sumptuous creeping horror slinks behind closed doors and hides in conversations dripping with subtext.

SXSW has always been synonymous with the best entertainment. As a television fan, I look forward to the pilot premiers and conceptual pilots even more each year. There is something so exciting about imagining what could be long before a network or studio has picked it up. SXSW 2024 is premiering one of those hidden gems. Neo-Dome, a genre-blurring character-rich story, is full of possibilities.

Ahead of SXSW 2024, I chatted with Dead Mail’s co-writers and directors, Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy. This up-and-coming filmmaking team has the creativity, unique style, and evident excitement to be the next indie voice in horror. It’s no longer good enough to pump out derivative stories that copy more than pay homage to those who came before them. Refreshingly, these two refuse to follow the crowd and have created a kooky film sure to surprise audiences.

Neon has a habit of making horror movies that are enigmatic, controversial, and usually pretty freaky. Along with A24, they are masters at viral marketing. A newly released Neon teaser leaves many clues but very little hard information. Which of the many horror movies they have coming out in 2024 does this teaser refer to? We don’t know, but we have some theories based on number ciphers and storyline consistency. It pays to have math nerds in my house.
