In the locker room Sunday, six San Francisco 49ers defenders described Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell with words such as “young,” “talented,” “good player” and “bad decisions.” They said they thought Howell had struggled primarily because he had a hard time adjusting to coverage changes post-snap and because his aggressive nature led him to make some reckless throws. “He likes to take chances,” corner Isaiah Oliver said.

Against the Bills, the Washington Commanders had the best view in the house as Buffalo’s Deonte Harty returned a first-quarter punt for 23 yards. Harty’s return, which resulted in a touchdown on the ensuing play, was the second time in as many games the Commanders had allowed a punt return of 20-plus yards; in Week 2, Denver Broncos receiver Marvin Mims had a 45-yard punt return in the second quarter. Washington’s own punt return unit hasn’t had a return of 20-plus yards in nearly three years.

Inside, before thousands at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center’s grandstand court, former college tennis stars Ben Shelton and Mackenzie McDonald were playing a matinee quarterfinal doubles match this summer at the DC Open.
