BERLIN (AP) — Newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff was stunned on her return to action Thursday, losing to Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-3 at the Berlin Open. The second-ranked Gauff, who won at Roland-Garros less than two weeks ago for her second Grand Slam title, amassed 25 unforced errors and seven double faults in her loss to Wang. Gauff had a bye to the second round at the grass-court tournament, a warmup for Wimbledon.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Jordan Spieth was forced to withdraw from the Travelers Championship after 13 holes Thursday when tightness in his shoulder blade reached a point he couldn't swing without pain. Spieth said the injury appeared out of nowhere, perhaps from sleeping on it in a bad position. He noticed it on the range, had his physical trainer work on him before teeing off and it never got any better.

South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore Joyce Edwards was named to the United States’ team to play in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Santiago, Chile, July 28-July 6. It marks her third time representing the U.S. on an international stage in as many summers. The Gamecocks’ leading scorer on last season’s national runner-up team Edwards is one of five SEC players to make the U.S.’s 12-player roster.
