Jun. 18—FALMOUTH — For the past three years, the Class A semifinal round has been a brick wall for the Thornton Academy boys lacrosse team. Wednesday afternoon at Falmouth High, the Trojans finally ran through it. No. 2 Thornton took control of the game in the second quarter, pulling away for a 15-9 win over No. 3 South Portland to advance to the state championship game for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019.

Jun. 18—FALMOUTH — Even when the Falmouth boys lacrosse team isn't at its best, it's still very, very good. Wednesday's Class A semifinal against Cape Elizabeth was proof of that. Jun. 17—GORHAM — The North Yarmouth Academy and Buckfield softball teams played two innings of the Class D South softball final Tuesday night at the University of Southern Maine, but with a steady rain and more coming, those two innings were wiped off the books. The game was stopped in the top of the third inning, with NYA holding a 3-1 lead, as the umpires deemed the pitching circle and home plate area unplayable due to the wet conditions.

"I really just wanted to strike them out, because I knew they're a really well-hitting team. I knew I couldn't give up hits," said Nicholls, a sophomore. AdvertisementNicholls allowed only one hit — a third-inning single by Sarah Orso.

May 29—When Kate Zehr is in the ring, the bear is never far away. It's a small stuffed bear, a gift from James "Skip" Neales, one of her trainers at the Portland Boxing Club. Whether Zehr is sparring at the Allen Street gym or competing at the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, like she did earlier this month in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the bear is in her equipment bag, a reminder of Neales and the advice he gave her.
