    The aurora australis has come back for another showing, coinciding with the reappearance of Matariki in the night sky on Friday. Kiwis have been sharing their latest shots of the dazzling electromagnetic display, including on the Aurora Australis NZ Facebook page. An aurora is produced when electrons from space hit Earth's magnetic field, colliding with molecules in the upper atmosphere, which produces stunning multicoloured lights near the Earth's magnetic poles.

    Police have issued more than 100 infringement notices and seized five cars after several boy racer meet-ups across Manawatū overnight Friday. A fleeing driver was also caught after doing double the speed limit through the streets of Palmerston North. As part of Operation Purple, officers were spread throughout the region to "disrupt gatherings and target illegal activity" with the help of the Eagle helicopter, according to Inspector Ross Grantham.

    Social Development Minister Louise Upston has defended the Government's move to cut funding for community food providers from next week. It comes after Auckland City Missioner Helen Robinson told AM on Tuesday that the organisation will have to turn people away due to the cuts. "As of July 1st we will receive very, very little money, so $75,000 is what the Mission will receive from Government," she said, adding that the Mission needs $1.5m each year to operate well.

    A Kiwi woman calls the Les Mills Plus free trial for its online exercise platform a "scam" and she's urging others to be cautious when signing up for such offers. The woman, Mary, told Newshub she was excited to try out the offerings from the Les Mills Plus platform (LM+), which features videos of more than 1500 workouts and classes. LM+ is an international company and is not affiliated to LMNZ. Mary signed up to the 30-day free trial, as advertised on the LMNZ website, believing it to be genuine.
