The Coyote Women’s Tennis team competed twice in Sioux Falls last weekend going undefeated against Missouri State Bears and Sioux Falls Cougars. The first match was against the Bears as the Coyotes won 5-2, claiming four singles victories and two doubles victories. Then against the Cougars, USD claimed all six singles matches and three doubles to win 7-0 over USF.

The South Dakota women’s golf team approaches the Summit League Championships on April 21-23 in Mayetta, Kansas. Sophomore Catie Nekola and the rest of the team are prepared to take on an entirely new course as they carry some momentum into the meet. “[We’re taking] our momentum into the Championships,” Nekola said.

The Coyote women’s tennis team is on the horizon of the Summit League Championship on April 19. Junior Grace Chadick and sophomore Anna Medvyedyeva have already had a record season, but could be looking at breaking more at the Summit League Championships. Chadick and Medvyedyeva are tied for the single-season record in doubles wins at 21. They had the chance to break the record in the last meet of the season against North Dakota leading 5-4 but the match went unfinished.

South Dakota hosted the annual Charlie’s Award Show for Coyote Athletics on April 14, where 28 people were presented with awards. Many athletes, coaches and staff were in attendance as many different student athletes and teams were recognized for their many achievements this year. Sixth-year senior football linebacker Brock Mogensen won the Dr. John Van Why Award, also known as the Male Student Athlete of the Year.

The South Dakota Coyotes women’s basketball team finished its regular season March 2 in a 65-54 victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. They were in the postseason until Mar. 29. Earlier this season, South Dakota competed in the Summit League tournament where South Dakota State beat the Coyotes 76-63 in the semifinals.

USD has created a new collective for athletes that allows for them to be paid based on Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). Since 2021, student-athletes have been able to be paid while staying under the umbrella of amateur athletes. South Dakota partnered with Student-Athlete Name Image Likeness, or SANIL, to create the Pride of the Western Plain, the official home of the University of South Dakota NIL.

Senior infielder Gabby Moser leads the Coyotes softball team with six home runs this season as South Dakota enters conference play looking for their first Summit League title. Moser has always had a love for the sport, pushing her to be where she is today. “I started playing softball when I was a little kid,” Moser said. Moser is not the only person in her family that holds a fondness towards softball, as it is a big part of her family’s dynamic and history.

The Coyote men’s and women’s golf teams are getting ready to start the spring season. The men’s team has six competitions in the spring season and have been projected to finish seventh in the Summit League standings led by fifth-year Max Schmidtke: an All Summit Preseason Watch List player. The season will kick off in St. Augustine, Florida, playing at the World Golf Village Collegiate from Feb. 19-20 hosted by Eastern Kentucky University.

The Coyotes track and field team is currently in the middle of their indoor season, yet some players have begun gaining major recognition. The Coyotes have taken three of the last four “Player of the Week” awards in field events for both the men’s and women’s track as well as field teams. Fifth-year senior Marshall Faurot won the Player of the Week award on Jan. 23. Following him was junior teammate Eerik Haamer, alongside junior Cassidy Mooneyhan on Jan. 30.

The Summit League is partnering with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) for the 16 straight year to host the Summit League Food Fight Challenge. The Food Fight is a friendly donation competition between Universities in the Summit League that works to raise money for non-perishable food items. The Coyotes have set a goal of 10,000 Ibs at the end of the competition. All proceeds will go directly to the Vermillion Food Pantry or Charlie’s Cupboard.
