Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images The Phoenix Mercury (5-2) improved to 1-0 in WNBA Commissioner’s Cup play with their 85-80 win over the Los Angeles Sparks (2-6) on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena. Trailing 47-29 with 2:54 left in the second quarter, the Mercury appeared to be dead in the water. Los Angeles dominated with 24 points in the paint. Guard Odyssey Sims scored 17 of her game-high 32 points in the first half, and Phoenix shot just 28.6% (10-of-35) from the field. But the game was not over yet.

Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images The Phoenix Mercury will be without forward Alyssa Thomas (calf) on Sunday afternoon against the Los Angeles Sparks. Thomas, who was named All-WNBA first-team in each of the last two seasons, did not travel with the team, reports Desert Wave Media. Thomas’ aggressiveness and steadiness will be heavily missed by the Mercury, who fell to 4-2 on Friday night against the Minnesota Lynx, 74-71.

Steven Bisig-Imagn Images The Phoenix Mercury suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Seattle Storm, 77-70. The Mercury, who beat the Storm by 22 points on May 17, shot 3-of-18 in the fourth quarter. “I thought we got good shots,” coach Nate Tibbetts said, via Desert Wave Media. “I thought the turnovers (the Mercury committed 20) maybe got us on our heels a little bit.” Phoenix struggled to take care of the basketball and committed nine turnovers in the third quarter alone.
