March 27, 2024 Editor’s Note: This is a guest commentary. The opinions do not necessarily reflect the views of the editorial board. I am writing in response to the recent commentary discussing changes to the music history curriculum in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. It appears to be the consensus of many students that the curriculum is beginning to stray too far from the “Western musical canon,” however, I come to offer a different perspective.

Imagination may, of course, also add great beauty, hope, and inspiration to cultures. But when, on the other hand, a mental mode of living distorts or oppresses the core values of the social brain, fractal scaling into substance may sadly corrupt and undermine society.

We can stay in our rut, just because it's easier to stay there than to get out and fly. Yet, for healing to take place - our own, our fellow humans, and the planet's - we need to learn to be flexible, to be open-minded, and even more importantly, to be open-hearted.
