Vincent Cervantes became the first Marquette first-year to win an individual title in nearly seven years, and the Golden Eagles won the Irish Creek Collegiate for their third title this season. Marquette shot nine-under as a unit on the second day, led by Cervantes’ six-under 64 at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina. The Golden Eagles were four shots shy of the lead to Morehead State University entering Tuesday’s 18 holes and won the event by 13 shots.

Marquette’s cold third round led to a runner-up finish in the Bell Bank “Pay it Forward” Collegiate. All of MU’s individual players finished in the top 20, with senior Max Lyons finishing second overall, posting 8-under over the three-round event at Wigwam Golf Club’s Gold Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona. Iowa State shot 20-under as a team in the third round to leapfrog Nebraska and Marquette and win the event, led by a 6-under round of 66 from junior Zachary May.

The Marquette Golden Eagles’ first postseason victory under Cara Consuegra didn’t come easy, but thanks to a strong second half, it advanced in the WBIT past the fourth-seeded Drake Bulldogs at Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa, 74-69 on Thursday afternoon. Marquette (21-10) faced a 10-point deficit at halftime after a dominant second quarter from Drake (22-12), and went blow for blow with the Bulldogs, outscoring them by nine in the third quarter and heading into the fourth quarter down one.

Max Lyons’ career-best finish helped propel Marquette men’s golf to a second-place finish at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island at St. Simons Island, Georgia, on Tuesday. The senior’s 6-under finish over the two rounds earned him third place overall on the leaderboard, jumping 23 spots from his team-leading performance in the event last season. Both junior Johan Widal and first-year Vinny Cervantes finished tied for 23rd, shooting 2-over for the tournament, which was a career-best finish for Cervantes.
