    I remember when I thought it improper to discuss politics in church. But the more I endeavored to avoid political rhetoric, the tougher it was to talk about Jesus. I don’t think all politics are religious or theological. But I do think that all religion and theology is political. When I say “political,” I do not mean “partisan.” I am not talking about conservative/rightwing or liberal/leftwing ideologies as we’d often understand them.

    There were no religious leaders in the Bible. At least not in the way we currently think of “religious leaders,” as though they were something separate from “civic” or “political” or just “regular” leaders. It might seem like a weird distinction to make, because we do see priests in the Bible. We see Sadducees and Pharisees. We see Sanhedrin councils. We see prophets. We see judges and kings and governors and satraps and tetrarchs and caesars. And these seem like religious leaders and civic leaders.

It looked like anger to a whole lot of people, but I recognize that sort of pain when I see it. It’s the sort of pain that makes you mad at the world. Since you can’t get back at the world, you try to settle the score with people. If enough people can feel the pain you feel, then maybe you and the world can call it even.
