The young and smallish Johnson County girls basketball team is making strides, but this rebuilding season will continue to present tall tasks. The Longhorns played well in the first half at home against Hampton on Thursday, only to find themselves down by double digits at intermission. The intensity and execution regressed in the second half, and the Bulldogs sped off to a 69-40 victory. Hannah Smith scored 21 points and Piper Helle added 15 for the Bulldogs (1-1, 10-4).

ERWIN — Freshman Brooklyn Sparks scored 14 points and Unicoi County spoiled the season debut of Addie Wilhoit with a 41-37 defeat of Tennessee High on Tuesday night in the Devils Den. Unicoi County improved to 1-1 in the Upper Lakes Conference and 9-9 overall. Tennessee High jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Blue Devils answered with a 21-0 run and were in control until things got hairy late due to missed free throws. “I thought our kids played well,” Unicoi County coach Brandon Broyles said.

David Crockett opened Upper Lakes Conference play with a complete performance on Thursday, and that’s about what was required to outlast Unicoi County. The Pioneers jumped out to a 10-0 lead, which proved to be the difference in a 71-61 victory. Senior 6-foot-4 guard Bradley Gouge (22 points, 11 rebounds), junior guard Stephen Hensley (20 points, 11 rebounds) and senior 6-foot-6 post Reagan Cash (15 points, 13 rebounds) each had a double-double for Crockett (1-0, 12-4).

The Unicoi County girls basketball team is jumping in the deep end of the Upper Lakes Conference. After opening its conference schedule at defending champion David Crockett on Thursday, the Blue Devils could face reigning ULC player of the year Addie Wilhoit in their second league game when Tennessee High visits the Devils Den on Tuesday. Wilhoit, an exceptionally skilled sophomore combo guard, hasn’t played this season, but was recently cleared to return from a back ailment.

After opening its Upper Lakes Conference schedule at reigning state quarterfinalist David Crockett on Thursday, the Unicoi County boys basketball team will take on preseason favorite Tennessee High in its second league game. The Blue Devils (0-1, 10-6) will host the Vikings (0-0, 13-5) on Tuesday, and the sledding could be every bit as rough as it was during a 71-61 loss at Crockett (1-0, 12-4). Tennessee High touts one of the area’s top players in 6-foot-1 senior point guard Colin Brown.

The Pioneers opened on a 17-3 run and Aaliyah Story paced four double-digit scorers with 16 points as they rolled to a 72-44 victory. Story, an athletic 6-foot-3 junior, was recognized prior to the game for scoring her 1,000th career point in late December.
