And several nonprofits have closed their doors altogether. Despite all of these challenges, some cultural organizations are buying buildings in metropolitan areas. In doing so, they’re infusing energy into neighborhoods zapped by COVID-19 and helping local artists by offering affordable workspaces.

Theaters across the country have recently been making headlines. And often, it’s not because of rave reviews or what’s on their marquees this season. Many are struggling. In June, the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles announced it was taking a programmatic pause at the Mark Taper Forum and undergoing restructuring. Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company released a statement that it was trimming staff and productions. After 20 seasons, Triad Stage in Greensboro, N.C. closed its doors.
