Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost – now known as Pope Leo XIV — has been elected as the 267th Bishop of Rome and the first pontiff from the United States. Born in Chicago in 1955, he served over a decade as a missionary in Trujillo, Peru, then led the Diocese of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023. Leo most recently served as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a powerful Vatican office charged with recommending new bishop appointments.

We have a new pope — and for the first time in history, he’s an American. Cardinal Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old from Chicago, was elected on the second day of the papal conclave. He took on the name Pope Leo XIV. Thousands of people were in St. Peter’s Square to greet the new pope, who appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica more than an hour after white smoke signaled his election.

Val Kilmer, the 1980's and ‘90s movie star who played everything from Batman to Doc Holliday, died on Tuesday, April 1, according to a statement released by his daughter to the New York Times and the Associated Press. He was 65. Kilmer's acting career was rooted in the theater. At 21, he became the youngest student at the time to be accepted into Julliard School’s drama department.

The moon shone a dramatic red Thursday evening into Friday morning, as it passed into Earth's shadow during a total lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth is between the sun and moon, and the three celestial objects line up in a nearly perfect row in an alignment called syzygy. When the moon is within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, faint sunbeams sneak around the shadow’s edges on all sides in the colors of a sunset, bathing the moon in reddish hues.
