    The South African Students Federation (SASF) has asked the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, to intervene in the evictions of students from their places of accommodation. Thousands of students across universities in South Africa have reportedly received eviction letters from their landlords due to failure to pay accommodation fees. The federation blames the process followed by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) when paying landlords.

The Barkly West Regional Court in the Northern Cape has set aside three days this week for the trial of David Mmelesi. Mmelesi was allegedly the driver of the vehicle that collided with a truck in April 2023. Justice Mokgoro died on 9 May last year.

    Mining company PP Gemstones has accused Assmang, a prominent mining company jointly owned by Patrice Motsepe’s African Rainbow Minerals, of carrying out illegal mining activities. This as the ongoing dispute involving a rare and valuable gemstone known as sugilitecontinues. PP Gemstone says it’s in possession of a permit to mine the rare earth mineral and says sugilitereserves at the disputed mine are worth billions of rand.
