The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has given the Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) 60 days to present a wage offer to the workers. Currently, the employer has refused to present any salary offer due to financial challenges. This prompted labour unions Satawu and UNTU to take the employer to the CCMA to bridge a wage impasse. The workers are demanding a 15% across-the-board wage increase for 2025/26, and the employer is at 0%.

The rand has continued to weaken further against major currencies amid an ongoing selloff in the financial markets triggered by the US tariffs. The currency fell sharply against the US dollar to R19.41. The local unit briefly plummeted to a record low of R25 against the British Pound earlier in the day. Analysts say the rand is also pressured by the tensions within the Government of National Unity (GNU) over the budget.

National Treasury’s Q2 report for 2024/25 reveals that municipalities underspent on conditional grants and capital projects. These funds were meant for infrastructure development and emergency disaster repairs. The grants were allocated for programmes to support the development of infrastructure and fund emergency repairs after unforeseen disasters. This also includes funding the implementation of electrification projects, funding the upgrade of informal settlements among others.

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation, (Necsa) is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its first nuclear reactor SAFARI-1. This is the first nuclear research reactor on the African continent commissioned back in 1965. The reactor located at Pelindaba, outside Pretoria, currently produces nuclear medical isotopes used for cancer detection and for cancer therapy globally. Stats SA says the total number of formal sector jobs has increased by 12,000 in the last quarter of 2024. The increase brings the number of formally employed people to 10,6 million. Trade contributed the highest number jobs during the quarter followed by business services and transport. However, community services, construction and manufacturing recorded a decline. There was an increase in both full-time and part employment on an quarterly basis.
