On 21 March 2024, the second stage of Australia’s vaping reforms bill was introduced before the Australian Parliament. The Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Bill 2024 (“the Bill”) proposes to outlaw the domestic manufacture, sale, supply, commercial possession, and advertising of non-therapeutic and disposable single use vapes in Australia.

The Australian Federal Government has announced the first stage of Australia’s vaping reforms, which are set to commence on 1 January 2024, with further changes implemented throughout 2024. This follows the plans to phase out non-prescription vapes announced by the Government on 2 May 2023 (see our article on the proposed reforms).

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has fined InstantScripts, a major Australian telehealth service provider, $742,500 for alleged unlawful advertising of therapeutic goods. The TGA claimed that the business, in the course of providing telehealth services, advertised prescription-only medicines directly to consumers.

On 2 May 2023, the Australian Federal Government announced significant vaping reforms and allocated AU $737 million in the 2023-24 Budget to stamp out illegal vaping (see our article on the summary of the smoking and vaping reforms). In August and September 2023, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), in coordination with other Federal and State agencies, conducted multiple raids across Queensland and New South Wales.
