Treaty Negotiations Minister Paul Goldsmith has acknowledged that some hapū within Ngāpuhi may choose never to settle their Treaty claims, but says the government’s push to conclude all settlements by 2035 remains firmly on track. His comments came on day two of Scrutiny Week, as Goldsmith and Justine Smith, CEO of Te Tari Whakatau, the Office of Treaty Settlements, and Takutai Moana fronted the Māori Affairs Select Committee.

Women from all walks of life arrived en masse at the electoral office of Finance Minister Nicola Willis to protest changes to pay equity legislation. Protest leaders say the Pay Equity Amendment Act 2025 will increase barriers to pay equity claims, resulting in the cancellation of 33 claims affecting approximately 180,000 female employees. Jo-Cahnelle Pouwhare, representing workers’ union E Tū, says the legislation, which passed under urgency this week, is gutting.

Te Matatini, Aotearoa’s premier kapa haka festival, will not go ahead in Te Tauihu o te Waka-a-Māui in 2027, as planned. Tā Herewini Parata, Heamana of Te Matatini Society Incorporated, said the decision, made by the Te Matatini board on Friday, was not a reflection on Te Tauihu, but a result of the festival’s rapid growth and concerns over smaller regions’ ability to accommodate burgeoning numbers.

The ‘will-they-won’t-they’ dance will continue for Te Pāti Māori, following the Privileges Committee’s decision to delay ruling on whether to punish the party for its haka during the first reading of the Treaty Principles Bill last year. A decision was expected late Wednesday night following yet another rescheduling of the hearing on Tuesday. Privileges Committee chair Judith Collins says the hearing will be put on hold.
