It was the roses near the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Kennewick that set Kevin Veleke on the path to bringing the veterans memorials scattered around the city back to their former glory. The Marine veteran of the Vietnam War was pruning the thorny bushes at the memorial when other veterans he volunteered with told him about the four other veterans memorials. And after visiting them, he saw they were in need of care. Fast forward to today.

The cost of the first phase of the Tri-Cities Airport’s next expansion will be more affordable than estimated. Port of Pasco commissioners unanimously agreed during their April 23 meeting to award the project to Richland-based Fowler Construction for just over $13 million. The primary portion of the project includes expansion of the baggage area foroutbound baggage and improvements at two gates. Fowler also will build three jetbridgesat Gates 2 and 5 as part of the project.

Benton Rural Electric Association (REA) is getting out of the internet services business. The public utility sold its PowerNET internet service to Yakima-based Advanced High Speed Internet for $110,000, Benton REA told the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business. Benton REA says that company is better positioned to serve PowerNET’s customers.

The same process that creates the tails of comets also may hold the key to a less expensive process to make long-lasting batteries. Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in a recently published paper, have shown that vapor from lithium oxide (Li2O) created via sublimation – going straight to a gas from a solid state – accelerates a chemical reaction that forms single crystals when mixed with nickel-rich precursors.
