STERLING – Some solid glove work was on display in Tuesday’s Western Big 6 game between Sterling and Geneseo. Both defenses were strong behind their pitchers, and the Maple Leafs’ big plays – combined with Madisyn Buysse’s three-run home run – were enough to top the Golden Warriors 3-2. The win puts the teams in a tie for second place in the league standings, 2½ games behind Rock Island (12-1).

STERLING – It’s been a pretty good week for the Sterling offense. The red-hot Golden Warriors defeated Alleman 13-0 in a five-inning Western Big 6 game Thursday, giving them 43 runs in the last two games after a 30-4 win on Tuesday in Galesburg. “I think the energy from Galesburg definitely carried over to this game, for sure,” Mya Lira said.

OREGON – In pressure situations in both halves of the seventh inning Tuesday, Dixon found a way to get the job done. Kennedy Haenitsch ripped a two-out, two-run single to break a 3-3 tie, then Allie Abell got the final two outs with the potential winning run on second base as the Duchesses defeated Oregon 5-4 in a Big Northern Conference game at Oregon Park West. “We haven’t beaten Oregon in a while, so it was really exciting to get this win,” Haenitsch said.

STERLING – In a battle between the two division leaders in the Three Rivers Conference, the Newman Comets came through in the clutch Friday against Sherrard. Two-out hits in three straight innings drove in six runs as the Comets won the crossover matchup of undefeated TRAC teams 10-3. “It’s the most important time in the game; when there’s two outs and you’ve got guys in scoring position, that’s when the pressure’s on,” Newman’s Garet Wolfe said.

OREGON – Despite being at a huge shot disadvantage Thursday, Oregon made the most of its chances to defeat Dixon 2-1 in a Big Northern Conference soccer game at Oregon Park West. Playing much of the game in their own end and being out-shot 21-5, the Hawks (9-5-1, 4-3 BNC) managed to capitalize on both of their first-half shots to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. “It was really big to get ahead early,” said Oregon forward Anna Stender, who scored both goals.
