DURANGO, Colo. — Duane Smith, a nationally acclaimed author, former Fort Lewis College history professor and longtime Durango resident, died on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in Durango. He was 87. Smith’s passion for Colorado history and his engaging teaching style earned him nicknames like “Colorado’s Clio,” “Homer of the Hills” and “Sage of the Silvery San Juans.”“He had a national reputation for being both scholarly and readable,” said Tom Noel, a former colleague and co-author.

The U.S. Coast Guard evacuated a cruise ship passenger from his boat off the coast of Oregon on Oct. 6 after the passenger suffered a heart attack at sea. The Holland America cruise ship Koningsdam was traveling from Victoria, British Columbia, to Hawaii when a male passenger had a heart attack. Someone onboard then called the Coast Guard. The Air Station Astoria out of Warrenton answered the call, but the ship was too far from Oregon at the time so it headed closer to the coast.

A fight between at least two people on Portland’s Eastbank Esplanade led to a stabbing Wednesday morning, police said. A witness who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive said the stabbing happened when a church group was handing out free food on the esplanade under Interstate 5. Sgt. Kevin Allen, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Bureau, said that any suspects fled the scene before police arrived and that officers have made no immediate arrests.
