SUDBURY - By declaring a toxic drug crisis epidemic this week, the Greater Sudbury Police Board is seeking to secure funding for services to help reverse recent trends. There were a reported 134 suspected drug toxicity deaths in Sudbury and Manitoulin districts last year, which is on par with recent years but far exceeds the pre-pandemic 79 recorded in 2019. Last year alone, 16,458 grams of drugs were seized by Greater Sudbury Police Service members.

The Cultural Hub at Greater Sudbury's government buildings complex, Tom Davies Square, is cleared to proceed, with a near-unanimous city council greenlighting a $65-million central library/art gallery. City staff cited an estimated cost of $68.8 million, but Mayor Paul Lefebvre amended the proposed motion during this week's meeting to limit its budget to $65 million.

The general contractor for the Lorraine Street transitional housing complex in Sudbury declared bankruptcy earlier this month, leaving the project in limbo. Work continued on site until Oct. 13, a city spokesperson confirmed to Sudbury.com, noting the second-floor installation was completed, weather-proofed, cleaned and secured. Sudbury.com visited the site on Oct. 26, and found a vacant construction site and a partially completed building with bright red building wrap.

With Mayor Paul Lefebvre touting it as an “historic” investment in Sudbury’s downtown core, city council voted to purchase several properties during their Oct. 24 meeting. The move came as a surprise to onlookers, with Lefebvre explaining to Sudbury.com after the meeting, “you can’t negotiate in public.”The affected properties are all slated to tie into the city’s downtown Events Centre project, and are all located in the two blocks to the immediate east of the Sudbury Community Arena.
