Recently, The First Descendant pushed out a big hotfix full of massive balance changes. If you don’t know the game, these changes might have looked absolutely insane. Ines’ ultimate cooldown tripled? Multiple characters getting damage buffs in the range of 100-300%?!? Surely this is a massive over-correction that will break the game! But the wild thing is, it wasn’t. It was actually a very measured response, and in this writer’s view it didn’t go far enough.

For some time now I’ve been thinking that I really want to sink my teeth into a new Diablo-style action RPG. I crave the satisfaction that can only come from mowing down hordes of monsters in spectacular fashion, and while The First Descendant scratches this itch somewhat, I’ll always prefer an RPG to a shooter. But when the time comes to choose a game, I come up short. None of the current offerings quite seem to be what I’m looking for, and increasingly this is starting to feel like a trend.

This week, The First Descendant has released a hotfix with sweeping character tuning changes to attempt to begin addressing the severe balance issues that have dogged Nexon’s looter shooter through much of its short life. Despite the event selling out virtually instantaneously, I managed to be one of the lucky few to snag a ticket to the Toronto stop of Warcraft‘s 30th anniversary tour. Being the MassivelyOP team’s one Canadian representative, I was determined to cover this important event… and eat free food and get free stuff. The event took place at the Rec Room, a chain of arcades/restaurants. The Toronto location is located in an old railway roundhouse almost directly below the iconic CN Tower.

As my colleague Justin said in his piece on World of Warcraft‘s recent Undermine(d) patch, comedic content in MMOs can be divisive. I’m someone who usually prefers that things be serious most if not all of the time. Comedic content in otherwise serious games almost always grates on me. Nonetheless, I’ve always had a soft spot for Warcraft‘s Goblins and their zany and often morbid humour. So it was with cautious optimism and a little trepidation that I headed into the Undermine(d) patch.
