    KEARNEY – Caleb Wiseman says he's been "very blessed" at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. “UNK has given me so many opportunities,” the junior said. Those opportunities wouldn’t have been possible without some fatherly advice. Wiseman’s parents, Chris and Deb, both attended UNK and graduated with teaching degrees. Chris was also a member of the Loper men’s basketball team. But Wiseman gave UNK little consideration during his college search.

    KEARNEY – Celebrate the season with Kearney Symphony Orchestra. The state’s oldest orchestra will present its annual holiday concert 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Merryman Performing Arts Center, 225 W. 22nd St.“Merry at the Merryman” includes music from Johann Sebastian Bach, Maurice Ravel and Carl Reinecke, along with other holiday favorites and a carol singalong. The performance also features special guest appearances and UNK Concerto/Aria Competition winner Jacob Cahill, a flutist from North Platte.

That’s a label she’s proud to wear. “Being first-gen means pursuing those opportunities in higher education that my parents didn’t have,” the University of Nebraska at Kearney junior said. “I’ve worked hard to get where I am, and my parents have worked hard to help me achieve my goal of going to college.
