Yesterday marked the third anniversary of Connor McDavid’s Game 5 overtime winner that ended the Edmonton Oilers’ playoff series against the Calgary Flames. A lot of Oilers fans are quick to jump on the idea that the Battle of Alberta victory ended up pushing the Flames into a rebuild. It’s a fun thought for sure, although I would imagine that Matthew Tkachuk still forces his way out regardless of the outcome of that Flames playoff run. What about the other side of that goal?

Last year, when the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars began their matchup in the Western Conference Final, you could see the path to stopping the Edmonton Oilers. At that point in 2024, the Oilers were basically getting all of their scoring with one of McDavid or Draisaitl on the ice. At 5v5, the team got 24 goals with one or both of McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice. Without those two? They had just four goals scored and had eight goals against.

The Edmonton Oilers have done a very good job of finishing off playoff series when leading during the Connor McDavid era. Since their first playoff run with McDavid and Draisaitl back in 2017, they’ve made a habit of finishing off opponents at the first opportunity. From knocking out the San Jose Sharks in Game 6 that year, to slamming the door shut on the Flames in 2022 and dispatching the Canucks and Stars in 2024, the Oilers simply don’t miss when it’s time to deliver the knockout punch.

The Edmonton Oilers are absolutely rolling, storming ahead with their first four-game winning streak since mid-January, and they’ve done it at the perfect time. After erasing a two-game series deficit against the Los Angeles Kings, they’re heading to the second round for the fourth straight year. In two of the past three seasons, they’ve reached the conference finals, only faltering once two years ago against the Vegas Golden Knights. Back then, the Oilers were simply outmatched.

RT @DownGoesBrown: NHL really working hard to switch up the narrative. https://t.co/Es00C5jmi3

This was honestly so predictable (and we hinted at it on Mondays ONR)

Sources: #NHL plans to continue to examine the #Oilers usage of LTIR salary cap relief for forward Evander Kane. The NHL may require more information to satisfy itself that the #Oilers complied with the CBA. Details: https://t.co/b4eWPlFvwl

RT @frank_seravalli: Don't expect the #Oilers to announce a deal in the near future as they're engaging in talks with other current roster…
